During these hard economic times it is wise to take a moment and organize ones personal life. Whether a young adult just starting off in life, a middle aged adult planning for the future, or a senior anticipating retirement it is always important to get your personal life in order by obtaining a Will, Durable Power of Attorney and Living Will.
As a young adult dealing with mortgages, marriage, child raising,...etc. it is so very important to plan ahead and make sure that you provide properly for your family, especially in the event you are not there to provide for them. A simple will with a testamentary provision allows you to set up a trust to provide for the future needs of your spouse and minor children. It also allows you to appoint a legal guardian for your minor children in the event you are no longer there to raise them.
As a middle-aged adult dealing with careers and future retirement plans, rising college costs for children, health issues, grand children, ...etc it is equally important to revise your will in order to accommodate the major changes in your life.
As a senior citizen our goals and plans change once again as we prepare for retirement and the inevitable down-sizing as our children move out and start their own families and we welcome grandchildren and even great-grandchildren into the family fold. During these times we often reflect on our personal property and the passing on of family heirlooms and treasures to future generations; items that can be addressed in our wills.
A Durable Power of Attorney and Health Care Surrogate allows us to appoint the individual(s) we want to step in during our disability in order to manage our affairs and make decision regarding our care. We may want to appoint our spouse, parent, in-law, sibling or close friend.
A Living Will allows us to make our own decision regarding the process of dying and the quality of life we will choose when death is inevitable; removing the burden from our spouse and family members.
It is always a good idea every 2-3 years to take time to reflect and to get your personal life in order by planning ahead with Wills, Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Care Surrogates and Living Wills. Get you personal house in order.
